in Mentoring?
You can change someone’s life AND impact our community at the same time. There are aged out youth and at-risk families who need someone they can trust to learn from. Why not help them take steps toward freedom and independence by using skills you already have! Below are two ways to mentor individuals connected to our local foster care system.
1. The Open Table - mentor an Aged-out Youth
Foster youth who turn 18 years old while still in the system are considered “aged-out.” Without support from caring adults, a very high percentage of these youth quickly become homeless, trafficked, or incarcerated. However, with support and guidance, these youth can beat those odds and move toward a future filled with possibilities. The Open Table model connects local professionals with an aged-out youth. The Open Table mentors meet with the youth over the course of one year to guide them towards positive change. If you would like more information about mentoring an aged-out youth through The Open Table model, send an email to Tracy Biglin by clicking below.
2. Foster Care Prevention - Mentor an at-risk family
Whether a child is at risk of being removed from their family or has already entered the foster care system, the county placing agency assembles a Child and Family Team (CFT). This team is comprised of the child and key individuals in his/her life. The CFT meets together to determine how best to address the child’s needs and achieve positive outcomes regarding safety, permanency, and well-being. As a member of one of these teams, you can provide a listening ear and be a source of encouragement for the biological family as they navigate recovery. Currently all CFT meetings are held via Zoom. If you would like to volunteer to join a CFT, click the button below to email Jessi Bierling for more information.
